About Eduardo Galeano

Eduardo Galeano is one of Latin America’s most distinguished writers. He is the author of the three volume Memory of Fire; Open Veins of Latin America; Soccer in Sun and Shadow; Days and Nights of Love and War; The Book of Embraces; Walking Words, We Say No, and Voices of Time. Born in Montevideo, in 1940, he lived in exile in Argentina and Spain for years before returning to Uruguay. His work has been translated into twenty-eight languages. He is the recipient of many international prizes, including the first Lannan Prize for Cultural Freedom, the American Book Award, the Casa de las Américas Prize, and the First Distinguished Citizen of the region by the countries of Mercosur. Mark Fried is the translator of seven books by Eduardo Galeano, including Children of the Days, Mirrors, Voices of Time, and Upside Down. He is also the translator of the novel Firefly by Severo Sarduy, the historical collection Echoes of the Mexican-American War and works by José Ignacio López Vigil, Emilia Ferreiro, Oscar Ugarteche and Rafael Barajas Duran. He lives in Ottawa, Canada with his wife, the writer Elizabeth Hay.
